Vaping–The Real Dangers Behind It

Vaping devices have become the “new thing” as a cigarette alternative. Vaping devices are electronic cigarettes, also known as e-cigs, that vaporize a flavored liquid that is inhaled. The common misconception is that vaping is safer than cigarettes, but recent research proves otherwise.
Many vapors gave up their pack of cigarettes for what seemed to be a safer choice. While other users such as adolescents simply began vaping as a recreational activity. According to the FDA, nearly 3 million users are middle to high school aged.
The problem with vaping is that the e-liquid still contains toxins just as potent and damaging as what is found in regular cigarettes. Toxins such as diethylene glycol, an additive used in lead, chromium, and antifreeze, as well as menthol, are found in e-liquid. Studies have proven a strong link between these toxins and the increased risk of periodontal disease, which is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. Dry mouth is another side effect of vaping. Some e-cig users have reported ulceration, or burns, in the mouth from the hot vapors.
You may not think that dry mouth is cause for concern, but it is; it leads to a dry cough and an increased risk of tooth decay. The bacteria that are naturally found in our mouths thrive in a dry environment. Sure, cavities can be treated and filled with a dental restoration, but tooth decay presents an active infection in your mouth. Meaning, the body’s immune system is consistently fighting against this infection.
With the use of e-cigs becoming increasingly popular in America, especially among the younger population, we must raise awareness on its harmful effects that could impact oral health in the long-term.
