Scaling and Root Planing
Scaling and root planing is a dental procedure that is ideal for patients suffering from periodontal (gum) disease. The purpose of scaling and root planing is to remove plaque buildup from around the patient’s teeth and slightly under the gum line which promotes a healthy mouth.
Why we recommend scaling and root planing
Plaque is a substance that hardens on our teeth and is caused by a buildup of harmful bacteria in our mouth. If not removed, plaque buildup begins to cause inflammation of the gums and eventually leads to periodontal disease. You cannot clean plaque buildup off of your teeth with at-home brushing and flossing. Plaque can only be removed by scaling and root planing.
Removing plaque and stopping the progression of periodontal disease is an important factor in preserving your smile and most importantly, your health. When gum disease progresses, it can cause you to lose your teeth. This procedure also helps heal gum tissue and prevents gum disease from progressing.
Since bacteria cause plaque buildup, we also offer the antibiotic treatment, Arestin. Applying this antibiotic directly to your gums kills the bacteria that cause gum disease. This antibiotic is commonly used in combination of a scaling and root planing procedure.
Clean teeth go beyond just a beautiful smile. Removing plaque buildup from your teeth and gums not only promotes a healthy mouth but contributes to your overall health as well.
Plaque buildup and periodontal disease can have devastating health effects on your body including:
- Stroke
- Diabetes
- Heart attacks
- Some types of cancers
- Kidney disease
- Pregnancy complications
Here is what you can expect during your scaling and root planing procedure
Sometimes, patients may experience tooth sensitivity due to gum recession. In this case, anesthesia is applied to the areas that will be treated.
Then, a dental hygienist uses special tools to clean your teeth and under the gum line, removing plaque buildup. Scaling and root planing is essentially a “deep clean” of your teeth and gums.
Following your procedure, it is important that you maintain healthy oral hygiene habits at home. Patients must follow through with regular brushing and flossing for the most effective results. A proper, well balanced diet also contributes to your oral health. We encourage all of our patients to eat a balanced diet.
