Inlays/Onlays
Sometimes, even with your best efforts, a tooth becomes damaged and in need of repair. When a tooth is not bad enough to require a crown but needs more than a standard filling, an inlay or onlay could be an option for repair.
Inlays and onlays can be made of all-porcelain, composite resin, or gold material that is molded to fit your tooth. They are used to repair the top portion of your tooth (the chewing surface), usually when extensive decay is involved. Inlays/onlays are ideal for replacing large metal fillings, and they actually help strengthen your natural tooth. Plus, they restore the beauty of your teeth.
Treatment for an inlay/onlay usually entails two visits. During the first visit, your tooth is prepared, decay or any old filling material will be removed (if present), and a temporary material is placed in the tooth. You will also have impressions taken of your tooth and sent to a dental lab where your inlay or onlay is custom-made. You later return to have Dr. Lippi permanently place the inlay or onlay into your tooth.
Benefits of an inlay or onlay:
- Provides natural looking appearance
- Custom-made for the best fit
- Reduced temperature sensitivity as compared to traditional, metal fillings
- Helps strengthen natural tooth structure
- Less invasive than a dental crown
How do I know if an inlay or onlay is right for me?
