Periodontal Treatment

Serving patients from Los Gatos, San Jose, Saratoga and the surrounding areas

Periodontics focuses on the tissue that surrounds your teeth, specifically, your gums. Many Americans suffer from periodontal (gum) disease and this disease is the leading cause of tooth loss. Gum disease begins with a build-up of plaque on your teeth that hardens and becomes tartar. When tartar is not removed by professional dental cleanings, it begins to cause inflammation of the gums, known as gingivitis.

Why is periodontal treatment important?

Once gingivitis becomes worse, it develops into gum disease, and the tartar begins to become trapped under the gums, creating what is known as a periodontal pocket. The tartar also begins eroding the jawbone. This is why teeth become loose and eventually extracted when patients experience gum disease.

For decades, traditional gum surgery could be performed to save teeth that had been affected by gum disease. Traditional surgery involves cutting of the gums and sutures. Healing time is longer and more painful. Now, with cutting-edge technology, we offer laser gum therapy to help repair your diseased gums and restore your smile.

Laser gum therapy works by biostimulation, which promotes healing in the gums. The laser also removes the tartar buildup around your tooth and the tooth’s root. Through this process, the laser also decontaminates the area under the gum line. Once all tartar has been removed, collagen fibers are used to help stabilize the blood clot inside the periodontal pocket. A special material is placed over the collagen fibers to allow the area to heal.

Benefits of laser gum therapy versus traditional gum surgery:

  • No cutting or use of sutures
  • Less healing time
  • Less traumatic to your mouth
  • More effective than traditional gum surgery
  • The procedure requires less time to complete
  • Provides lasting results, nearly 98% of patients treated with laser therapy remain stable after five years
  • Less than a 24-hour recovery
  • Safe for patients with diabetes, hemophilia, and those taking blood-thinning medications
